Lisa Wingate is one of my favorite storytellers, and it is a deep-seated joy to be celebrating the release of her newest novel, The Prayer Box, on the porch this week. I had the enormous pleasure of reading the novel a few months ago, and I was struck by how both captivated and cradled I was by the main character’s (Tandi) journey toward healing on the wild, quirky-peopled and beautiful Hatteras Island.
What struck me most about this novel was how one woman’s life can impact another – from the grave. In this case it’s Tandi’s elderly neighbor (and landlord) who has left behind a myriad of lessons and treasures which Tandi will discover as she finds herself in the odd position of discovering her neighbor’s death and cleaning up the old home in preparation for it to be sold.
Tandi is desperate on many levels, and she has every reason to fear for her life. Nevertheless, this journey through a dead woman’s physical belongings will meet her spiritual needs and fill her with hope.
How many times have we learned about a woman far removed in time and space from our own lives and found ourselves encouraged? Found ourselves knowing – if she could do it then, if it was this real for her at that time – then it ought to be for me now.
Our stories matter. They have a rippling impact that continues long after we are gone. Savor The Prayer Box because it is both a thrill and a treasure. And remember to look for those stories all around us. They may be as close as a departed neighbor’s home, and all we have to do is push on the creaky front door, take a deep breath and step inside.
