Happy Monday, everyone! Can you believe February is here already? Wasn’t it Christmas just yesterday?
And now, here we are, setting out on that most special of special months… the month of L-O-V-E. Remember those grade school years, when February was all about Valentine’s cards, and who was tucking special cards and treats into your little Valentine’s shoebox at school? There’s nothing quite like celebrating the joy of falling in love. And with that in mind, we’re sharing love stories this week on the porch at BelleView. Since I’ve shared my own before, I thought I’d borrow this little wedding-themed interview that ran on Rachel’s blog when her bestseller, The Wedding Dress, was new on the shelves.
You may recognize a face or two in this little story:
From Rachel Hauck’s Beautiful Brides Series, celebrating The Wedding Dress:
Besides being a fab author, Lisa Wingate is one of my fellow Belles over on SouthernBelleView. Love blogging and associating with this woman.
About her wedding dress, Lisa writes:
One of the neatest things about our wedding was that my dress was remade from my mother’s dress. She is an incredible seamstress, and may hours of tender loving care went into creating that dress.
(RH: Lisa’s mom Sharon in the original dress. I love the wide skirt!)
Another special event at our wedding day didn’t happen during the wedding, but during the reception afterwards.
I had so much fun doing that interview about my wedding dress and talking about the love stories in my family! So what about you? Is there a special love story in your family? Leave a comment and share!
– Lisa

You are a beautiful bride, Lisa. I love the picture and the restyled dress. And, the story of your grandparents cutting a rug at the wedding reception is priceless!

Gram and Gramps on the dance floor during the whole reception! I love it! You and your mother both look so beautiful in that dress, Lisa. Sweet, sweet family stories on the porch today.

Thank you, girls! It was so fun to go back and relive that memory of my grandparents cutting a rug at our wedding. That was a precious moment I’ll never forget!

In 1948, my mother purchased a wedding dress for my sister that was way, way, way out of our familly’s budget, bless her heart! It was worn by my sister, two of her college roommates, myself and one other sister. Then it was put away in Mom’s cedar chest. On my sister’s 50th anniversary (1998) it was brought out for her granddaughter to model at the anniversary festivities. It looked so good on her, that when it was her time to wed, out came the dress again. What was once a snowy white, was now a beautiful creamy, ivory. Jamie, the bride, looked so beautiful in the now almost 55 year old dress. The secret of the dress was to dry-clean after each wearing, wrap in tissue paper, and store in a cedar chest.

My daughter wore my wedding dress, too. What a fun thing to remember. There’s something special about a dress with history. I’ll have to pick up Rachel’s book!

Lisa, I’m late to the porch this week. Glad I backed up, though! I know from experience that I would miss a blessing if I didn’t.
Love the story of the dress shared with your mom, and super love the dancing grandparents!

Great love stories! In our family this year we will be married 35 years, my sister and her husband will be married 45 years, and my Mom & Dad will be married 65 years. That’s 145 years of marriage!

My grandmother Laura was part of a family in Saginaw Michigan that proudly traced their origins back to the American Revolution through several lines. My grandfather Louis was the American-born son of German Immigrants. Against the wished of BOTH sides they married. My grandfather worked from apprentice roofer to own his own roofing firm in Detroit. His wife and 4 children lived a privileged life until the Great Depression wiped out the assets of the firm. Too many customers had been granted credit and were unable to pay.
Laura was diagnosed with cancer and had little will to fight it. Within a year, Louis also died, also with no will to live without his beloved wife. To this day they say he died of a broken heart.
My mother, the youngest of the 4 children, named me after the grandparents I would never meet in this life.
