Happy holiday Monday, everyone! I hope this Labor Day finds you relaxing with friends and family, or visiting a favorite vacation spot, or both. Here at Southern BelleView we’ve gathered on the porch with our sweet tea and a platter of teacakes for a book club discussion! I’m honored to say that this Belle Book Club Week is about my brand new book, The Prayer Box, which is hitting bookstore shelves and winging its way to e-readers everywhere right now, this week, TODAY, y’all!
I’m excited, and thrilled… and, I’ll admit, just a little bit nervous. It’s hard not to be when a book travels out into the world. It’s like the moment at the Kindergarten door when you have to finally let go of that precious little hand and release someone you dearly love into the world, come what may. You hope for the best, and you fear the worst, and you pray that everything goes well for your baby. The Prayer Box is a special story for me. It’s been a joy (and once again, a relief) to see the early reviews come in with positive responses — a Top Pick from RT Bookreviews, a Starred Review from Booklist, and Publisher’s Weekly graciously gave the book a rave, calling it, “A masterful exploration of the road to redemption.”
But still the questions (and the little worry-voice) remain… Will people like it? Will they want to journey along with the characters through struggle, and sacrifice, and heartache, and hope? Will they tell their friends about it? Read it in their book clubs? Pick it up in bookstores and take it home? Will the book succeed?
And then I realize, the worry-voice doesn’t accomplish anything. It only steals the joy of what should be a glorious moment. The truth is that I love this story. I’m proud of it. I’ll never forget traveling to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to research it.
I loved living within the world of The Prayer Box as I was writing – discovering the silent corners of Iola Anne Poole’s big, white house, finding her undiscovered treasures, meeting the crazy, one-eared cat who shared her space. I loved watching Tandi Reese find Iola’s eighty-one prayer boxes when she’s hired to clean out the house after Iola’s death. I loved watching Tandi learn about Iola’s unsung life. I rejoiced with Tandi as she grew, and changed, and began to understand that we can’t define our value by what other people think of us.
So, that becomes the mission for the week. Silence the worry voice, and rejoice, rejoice, rejoice! In the name of that mission, I thought I’d share a few bits of the reality behind The Prayer Box:
