Happy Monday everyone! I hope this note finds you enjoying the last days of summer and looking forward to all that autumn will have to offer. Around BelleView today, we’re having one last summer gathering — talking about summer memories, summer trips, and all the fun things that went on these last few months.
I have to admit, this one stumped me a little bit. Around the Wingate house, this has been a busy, working, get-r-done sort of summer , a prepping for college summer, a there’s a book deadline summer, a we don’t have time for a summer trip summer. I’m not complaining. Summer began with our double-double high school and college graduations and now draws to a close with our big-big boy starting his career and our big-little boy successfully off to college. We’re so proud of them and there’s so very much to be thankful for.
But that doesn’t help me with the “Share something fun that you did this summer” question. I need a story to tell…
And then, suddenly it comes to me. Wait! I have fun this summer… sort of by proxy, but it was wonderful, and exciting, and totally new. This summer was the summer of The Sisterhood Of the Traveling Book. In case you haven’t heard about it, here’s what happened:
In these last months leading up to the release of The Prayer Box, we (and this is the royal we, because I can’t remember whose idea it really was) hatched this crazy idea to send 17 early copies of The Prayer Box on journeys all over this country and a couple others in The Sisterhood Of the Traveling Book. Each traveled through the mail in a Sister Circle of readers. The sisters read, they jotted down their thoughts in the pages when they found a passage that struck a chord or triggered a memory, they snapped a photo or two, and they sent the book on to the next sister.
The results? Even this was a no-travel summer for our family, I feel like I’ve been on dozens of different vacations, hanging out with the book sisters all summer. Seeing all the places the books have traveled has been such J-O-Y at a time when empty nest was looming and, to be honest, I needed a shot of joy! And to be honest about one more thing, more than once I’ve been jealous of the book. I wish I could’ve stuffed myself inside it and gone along. The Prayer Box has been to the beach, the mountains, and dozens of other places that look so tempting. Here are a few graciously-shared photos, just plucked at random:
And the first of the traveling books arrives back home at the “Cooking the Book” event in Waco, TX, safe in the hands of Melanie Backus and Britney Adams. So much fun to see it come home again and to read their thoughts. What a treasure!
